FOSSICKING

Bingara has been called a gold fossickers and rock hunters paradise as well as a geological wonderland. In fact the web site fossicking in oz states “Bingara district boasts the greatest variety of geology of any shire in NSW”

For those with experience and knowledge of what to look for there are abundant areas to explore. For the rest of us there are some designated areas which consistently provide finds (in the case of three creeks and all the immediate diamond mines the finds were so consistent they are now working mines and closed to the public). Simply click on the above icons above for site specific information.

One problem for beginners is you could overlook some really nice finds as they appear very plain in their unpolished state (example of jasper to the left). So we would recommend a little research before setting out so you know what tools are required and what the various stones look like in their natural state. Sites such as www.rockhounds.com or http://www.users.bigpond.com/goldpan/ are a very good place to start.

Safety while fossicking

A day in the bush fossicking can be great fun, however your personal safety should also be considered.

  • Take adequate water
  • Beware mine shafts
  • Check the weather forecast and wear appropriate clothing
  • Fire is a danger in summer, always check fire bans
  • Tell someone where you are going
  • Keep an eye out for wildlife (such as snakes)
