Fishing

Anglers visiting Bingara have access to some of the best freshwater fishing in the state. Bingara’s fishing paradise is probably one of the best kept secrets in the fishing world. Thanks to more than 20 years of restocking by the local hatchery, the Gwydir and Horton rivers have great populations of Murray Cod and Yellow Belly (Golden Perch).

Where To Fish

Drive along Old Keera Road to the pump station, which is situated opposite the hospital. A short gravel road on the left leads to an iron gate. Proceed through the gate, after a short incline the road leads to a three way division. The left hand track ends at what is known locally as pump house hole, highly recommended for land based fishermen.

The centre track leads to good water along the bank, passing a location where boats may be launched. A 4WD vehicle is essential for boat launching and retrieval here.

The right hand track will lead past a gravel pit to an area known locally as the flying fox, there is good fishing along the bank right up to a shallow neck of rapids.

Alternatively follow Keera Road from the bridges, after crossing a cattle grid look for a track leading off to the left. Once you locate the track follow the dirt road along to any of a number of prime sites as pictured below.

Whilst there are many more spots to fish we don’t want to take all the fun out of your trip so we will leave these for you to discover, but don’t forget about Copeton Dam.

fishing licences are available from Bingara Newsagency as are brochures on fishing rules and regulations.
