The place where birds of the east meet birds of the west
With Copeton Dam, The Gwydir River and it’s tributaries, dense bushland and open grassy plains this area attracts birds of the inland plains and forest, together with birds associated with the wet east coast. So you can look forward to an interesting variety of colours and sounds.
Beginners
Now observing our feathered friends going about their business in the wild is not always easy however a lot of roads and lanes of the Bingara district were once used by drovers to move livestock.
These trails, known as travelling stock routes include fenced reserves and open laneways, accessible to the public, so with a pair of binoculars and/or camera you will be able to get up close and personal to a wider range of birds than a lot of other locations. Please remember though the goal is to observe not disturb.
Hint: By listening for the bird calls you will be able to find some birds not immediately visible.
Bird Routes
A simple stroll down to the Gwydir river would be the first place to start. With a couple kilometres of walking trails this is a nice easy introduction where you should be able to view a diverse range of birds. After your practice run by the river you can graduate and select one of the following Bingara Bird Routes.
Bird Route 1 Upper Bingara
Bird Route 2 Gravesend Rd - Eulowrie Rd - Pallal Rd
Bird Route 3 Adam’s Scrub - Gineroi Rd
Bird Route 4 Whitlow Rd - Myall Creek Memorial
Bird Route 5 Keera Rd (Bora Creek) - Copeton Dam Rd
