The town's museum, at 16 Maitland St, is a complex of historically important items and buildings with the first being the old post office hotel, thought to be the town's first tavern and certainly the oldest surviving structure in town.
It was built in 1860 of pit-sawn and hand-adzed local cyprus timber The roof is of puddled iron, much of which is still intact. Timbers were fastened with wooden dowels rather than nails and are still remarkably sound.
The museum possesses a working smithy, a small school, an extensive collection of gems, minerals, photographs, bric-a-brac and furniture.
